Tulsa, Okla. The Komen Tulsa board of directors announces that the 2011 Komen Tulsa Race for the Cure will be held at ONEOK Field in 2011. According to Ashley Antle, president of Komen Tulsa board of directors, the decision to move the Race downtown is based on several factors.
In order to realize our vision for a world without breast cancer, it is important that we be accessible to everyone in our community, especially those in greatest need of assistance, Antle said. A recent community needs assessment conducted by Komen Tulsa revealed that the zip codes in and around downtown have the highest incidence of breast cancer mortality and late stage diagnosis.
Antle continued, Holding the Race at ONEOK Field puts the event in a more centralized location, making it more accessible to everyone in the community. We believe this will give us an even greater opportunity to educate all women in our community on the importance of early detection.
Over the past five years, the Tulsa Race for the Cure has experienced an 89% growth in participation with over 12,300 participants in 2010. The move downtown will allow organizers to design a Race course that will accommodate this large number of runners and walkers. They will also be able to create a traffic pattern that does not hinder, but benefits downtown restaurants and businesses.
