All Pink Is Not Created Equal

October 4, 2011

Running Ribbon 96x96As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches, Komen Tulsa reminds breast cancer awareness advocates that all "pink" is not created equal. While many credible companies sell pink products and service during October, it is important to be a savvy consumer and check the labels to ensure that your money is truly making an impact in the fight against breast cancer. Here are a few questions you should ask before making a "pink" purchase:

How much of my purchase will actually be donated to a charity? "A portion of the proceeds..." can be misleading and doesn't cut it with Komen. Look for a dollar amount, or a maximum gift guaranteed from the company selling the product.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure®To which charity will the donation be made? Do you recognize the charity on the label as a reputable organization? More importantly, does the label even list a charity to receive the donation? Stay away from products and offers that do not identify a credible charity to receive their donation, or you simply do not know what you are donating to.

Does the product or service support your charity of choice? Many breast cancer organizations establish partnerships with credible local and national companies to ensure their advocates can purchase "pink" with confidence. Komen Tulsa suggests supporting the following companies throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Reasor's Pink for the Cause
Throughout the month of October, Reasor's will donate $1 for every "Pink for the Cause" card and $0.50 for every tote bag sold to Komen Tulsa.
